Mariangela Mazzeo – Biography

Mariangela Mazzeo is a Set and Costume Designer.

After earning her bachelor’s degree with honors in Set and Costume Design from the Brera Fine Arts Academy in Milan, she began her career in advertising and interior design.

Following several years of work in Milan, she moved to Venice, where she spent two years collaborating as an assistant, draughtsman, and artist for the Studio Matteo Corvino and Antonia Sautter Creations and Events.

During this time, she contributed to the creation of some of the most exclusive and luxurious events, including the magnificent Il Ballo del Doge at the Pisani Moretti Palace.

After gaining experience in events, communication, and advertising, she returned to her first passion, theatre.

She began working as an assistant to designer Andrea Belli, with whom she had the opportunity to design and actively participate in the realization of several theatre productions, including operas, plays, and circus shows, both in Italy and internationally.

Notable recent productions collaborating with Andrea Belli include XerxesLa Cenerentola, and L'amour des trois oranges, all produced by the Bonn Opera House and directed by Leo Muscato, and the production of Tosca for the Opéra National de Lorraine, directed by Silvia Paoli.

In October 2019, she officially began her collaboration as Assistant Designer to Stephen Brimson Lewis, former Head of Design at the Royal Shakespeare Company.

She continued to work with the Royal Shakespeare Company as Studio Designer and Digital Concept Artist contributing to the realisation of the Live Digital Performance DREAM.

In the latter part of 2021, Mazzeo designed the sets and costumes for three contemporary operas for CrossOpera: Otherness, Fear, and Discovery, a European project involving theaters in Modena, Linz, and Novi Sad, directed by Gregor Horres.

This project marked the beginning of a collaboration with the Landestheater Linz, where she worked on several new productions.

These included Wanda Walfisch (Children’s Opera, where she worked as Costume, Masks, and Video Designer), Die Prinzessin auf der Erbse (Set and Costume Designer, directed by Martin Philipp), and Il Viaggio (a contemporary diptych by Alois Bröder, directed by Gregor Horres).

In recent years, she has returned to designing spectacular live and digital shows for Secret Cinema and Done+Dusted in both London and the Middle East.

In 2025, Mariangela continues her work as a designer for both theatre productions and large-scale immersive events.
